Overcoming Panic Disorder

Overcoming panic disorder is a three step process which takes hard work, but is worth the effort.

Diagnosis

While you might have suffered from a panic attack, this does not necessarily constitute a panic disorder. A panic disorder is a condition in which panic attacks are experienced on a daily basis, causing them to be debilitating to your life. You might begin to avoid going outside of your home because you're afraid of having another panic attack or you might begin to fall behind at work because of your condition.

But only your doctor or a licensed mental health professional can help you diagnose a panic disorder. If you feel you might be one who has the disorder, it's a good idea to make an appointment to see a medical professional for a clear diagnosis.

Treatment and Therapy

Once you have been diagnosed as having a panic disorder, you will want to seek out treatment. This might include therapy or medication, or some combination of both. Some family doctors might want to begin you on a short regimen of panic disorder medication to see if this helps you first. Over the course of a few weeks, your body will become used to the medication and you will begin to see whether your attacks decrease in intensity. You might need to try a few different medications to see if there is one which works better for your panic.

In some cases where medication is not an option or you may be hesitant to take medication, you will want to think about therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy is the most commonly used therapy for panic disorder. This therapy works with a patient to help them see the patterns which can lead to panic and then helps the patient begin to change the anxiety patterns.

Long Term Approach

For those who truly suffer from panic disorder, the medication and therapy regimen may be something they continue for the rest of their lives. But these therapies will control the panic and allow a person to continue to have a productive and happy life - without panic. Realizing that each day is a day you do not have to give into panic can help you to see that even though you might still have an anxiety attack from time to time, you do not need to be controlled by your fears.
